Considering how much we pay in taxes it sure should be! The problem is that there is far too much greed and wasted spending to ever make this a reality.

I simply cannot believe the sheer quantity of drivel I am seeing here. I know you conservatives (from both major parties) seem to think that they have it so bad over in Europe… but once again I will remind you that most European countries allow their students to go to college for free. Guess what? Some of the greatest universities in the world have thrived under this system and it frees people from the peculiarly American practice of intentionally saddling people with mountains of debt right at the beginning of their careers. It does in fact allow service to be substantially cheaper and while most Europeans have to pay higher prices on your everyday consumer items they pay much less for the bigger stuff (except housing, for the most part).

To those of you living in the fairyland where nobody is incapable of paying for college: what sorts of hallucinogens are you on? I’d like some…

Would you define “entitlement” for me first? All people have rights, but being entitled to something implies an effort to earn it, as far as I’m concerned. That’s why referring to Social Security as an entitlement that was given by the government burns me up. People were ordered to pay into a retirement savings plan administered by the government because they weren’t smart enough to save for themselves. Now, Ted Kennedy wants to scrap it because it’s too expensive. It might not be if Congress had left it alone during the Johnson years, but the “Great Society” expanded coverage to include many who never put in. It also decided that the fund should be part of general revenue rather than a separate fund. Until that point, Social Security was running in the black. Now it’s a mess, but not because of the taxpayers–it’s because of guys like Ted who liked to spend. Any program which guarantees “free” health care or “free” education must be suspect because there ain’t nothing in life that’s free. Somebody pays for it, but the cost is hidden from the general public. How many insurers are you going to put out of work? What are you going to do about malpractice insurance and lawsuits? How will you handle the “book” smart doctor who is a butcher with a scalpel? Who’s going to make things right for the patient who was wronged? And those are just a few of the questions which need to be answered.

No! Earn it. We provide for illegals better then American citizens. If we closed the boarders and started the Bracero programme back up, we could give all Americans and legal residents medical care.

First, how would this idea be funded? The obvious answer is by higher taxes; and therefore, every single citizen would be paying for this program. Thus, education and medical care will NEVER be free.

Second, if any and every one could attain doctor status, doctors would no longer be considered “white collar.” Indeed, doctors’ pay would decrease and not as many people would then seek to become one. As a result, people would not necessarily be happier since they would be “run of the mill” with average pay.

Third, I really doubt that these “professionals” would reduce their fees just because they did not have student loans. Many, many doctors do not have student loans, and they still charge high fees. Also, how would there be “free” medical services if these doctors were charging for their services??? I’m confused… Is the government now paying these fees??? If so… even higher taxes would be imposed.

Last, socialized medicine has some of the longest lines when it comes to being seen by a doctor. Have you researched the wait for MRI’s, chemo, and radiation in countries that have “free” medical services. In fact, many Canadians come to the U.S. for treatment because they have to wait so long.

Therefore, the idea of “free” education, medical services, food, shelter, clothing, etc. are wonderful, BUT they are paid for in one way or another. Further, the implementation of such programs usually create more problems than anticipated, and governmental control of private matters is never a “good” idea. Thus, a smaller more focused government is what America needs… not more intrusion into our private affairs and lives.

Nope, not better. I’m over taxed as it is.

Our country rose to the top of the world in a very short time due to individual independence, not social programs.

If you like social programs, feel free to go where they already have them.

Our country is great and unique due to its strong individualism, let’s keep it strong and unique!

Who is going to pay for all of this “free” health care and education?

Poor people are already eligible for free health care (Medicaid) and education (pell grants, etc.). No one is this country is held back because of lack of money. They are only held back due to their own laziness and lack of ambition. The system is in place and works for those who want it. One of my best friends went through college on government funds and now has a Master’s degree and is very successful. Her parents were dirt bag drug addicts and she grew up in foster homes.

Free medical service for “all” would be a disaster. “What? You think your son has an ear infection? We can see him in three to four weeks…” No thank you.

There wouldn’t be more doctors because if there were, the salary would be less competitive and people wouldn’t want to be doctors so much. And, smart people are few and far between. Not just anyone can be a doctor.

It’s a sweet thought, though

Just wondering, after you pay to make a doctor and he/she provides free medical care, who pays his/her bills, the nurses, the hospital janitors and let’s not forget the teachers passing out all of this knowledge for free. Who is paying scientists, leaders et al?

Free education thru 12th grade then your on your own, beg or borrow, be what YOU can be and charge what someone is willing to pay you.
