Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackPublic education is free in America….for the most part.
No countries have free education it’s paid for with tax dollars. Some countries have subsidized university as well as primary education. Most major universities also have large enough endowments to offer full scholarships.
Education is free all over Europe, you know, and not just former communist countries. Finland has one of the best educational systems in the world and it’s free, education is free in France, Italy, UK, Spain, Germany, Greece, Norway, Sweden…Of course, there are private schools in all these countries but the majority of the students attend public schools where they don’t have to pay.
There’s no such thing as free education. Schools and books and such cost money to make, teachers need to eat, that costs money, etc, etc. Someone pays, and that cost is eventually spread throughout society. I.e., if your education is “free”, other things are going to be more expensive. From what I’ve heard, the best country for “free” education is California.
Furthermore, putting government money into education makes education itself more expensive. How, you ask? It’s quite simple, if the government hands out more grants and loans and such, then the University raises its tuition. Then dirty politicians will say, “Tuition’s gone up, we’ve got to increase education funding!” And when education funding goes up again, tuition goes up again. As you can see, it’s a vicious cycle.
The end result is that poor and middle class kids who are too proud to go groveling to the government on their bellies, can’t afford the tuition, and are denied an education.
